National minority issues

Promoting an inclusive civic identity and a tolerant society in Moldova is an important precondition for achieving a lasting, comprehensive political settlement of the Transdniestrian conflict.

Overview

The Mission supports the Moldovan Government in advancing human rights policies that make Moldova’s diversity a tangible strength and create a sense of common home for the whole population of Moldova, whether they belong to national minorities or regional groups. In this regard, the Mission, in co-operation with the Office of the High Commissioner on National Minorities, enhances the professional capacity of state and local authorities to implement the National Strategy for Consolidation of Interethnic Relations 2017–2027.

In order to contribute to the implementation of this Strategy, the Mission has provided support to the Agency for Interethnic Relations, the ombudsperson’s office and the Equality Council. Since 2018, this support has aimed at enhancing their capacity and sustainable co-operation in protecting and promoting the rights of national minorities and consolidating interethnic relations in the Republic of Moldova.
