Other confidence-building measures
The Transdniestrian settlement process
Achieving a lasting, comprehensive political settlement of the Transdniestrian conflict depends on promoting an inclusive and tolerant Moldovan society, based on the respect for the rule of law and human rights. The Mission supports the country’s efforts to nurture these qualities, which serve as confidence-building measures for the settlement process.
Promoting an inclusive identity and tolerant society
The Mission supports the implementation of the Government’s Strategy for the Consolidation of Interethnic Relations, which promotes an inclusive and open society in the Republic of Moldova. An inclusive society will create a sense of common home for the whole population of the country, whether they belong to national minorities or regional groups. In the same context, the Mission supports implementation of a national Action Plan on Holocaust Remembrance and Education, which is an important step initiated by the Republic of Moldova to have an open and constructive discussion of painful periods of its history.
Strengthening the rule of law as a cornerstone of good governance
The Mission supports efforts to fully affirm the 1994 Moldovan law on Gagauzia’s special legal status that established Gagauzia as an autonomous territorial unit within the Republic of Moldova. The Mission proceeds from the premise that a fully functional autonomy for Gagauzia would serve as a confidence-building measure for the Transdniestrian settlement process.
Advancing human rights on both banks
The confidence-building efforts of the Mission seek to advance the settlement process and span both banks of the Dniester/Nistru River. In line with its mandate, the Mission promotes the observance of the rights of persons on both banks, including the rights to healthcare, education and other basic public services. The Mission provides advice, expertise and best practices to authorities, students, residents, civil society and professionals on both banks to facilitate the protection and realization of these rights.
