Tolerance and non-discrimination

The Mission assists the Moldovan authorities in increasing awareness and understanding of the Holocaust in a local context as a way to promote an open and constructive discussion of painful periods of a country’s history.

Overview

Building an inclusive and tolerant society often involves promoting an open and constructive discussion of painful periods of a country’s history. There are diverging interpretations of modern history and the recent painful past between the two banks of the Dniester/Nistru River.

To bring into the light some of these periods, the Mission, in co-operation with OSCE institutions, has been assisting the Moldovan authorities in increasing awareness and understanding of the Holocaust in a local context. To that end, the Mission facilitated interaction between Moldova’s officials and the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance, which Moldova joined in 2014 as an observer country.

In 2019, the Moldovan Ministry of Education and Research teamed up with the Mission to Moldova to develop an optional course on the Holocaust in a local context, which is now available to school pupils in Moldova. The Ministry also co-operates with the Mission on building capacities of schoolteachers to teach this course.

Since 2023, the Mission enhances the practicability and accessibility of the optional course on the Holocaust by developing an interactive, online learning tool for students and teachers that can be used also while teaching regular history classes or other disciplines.

All these efforts by the state authorities have a positive impact on building an open and tolerant society in Moldova.
